Qamishli, northeastern Syria – The Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), General Mazloum Abdi, said on Thursday that the Kurdish Unity Conference aims to preserve Syria’s territorial integrity through a decentralized, democratic system.
Speaking at the opening of the conference in Qamishli, Abdi stressed, “Kurdish unity means Syria’s unity and strength,” and called for a new Syrian constitution that secures the rights of all ethnic and religious groups, including Kurds.

“For 14 years, we have fought for the peoples of this region, sacrificing 13,000 martyrs,” Abdi said, while welcoming the support of Kurdish leaders from Iraq, including Masoud Barzani and Nechirvan Barzani.
Hamid Darbandi, representing Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, echoed the call for Kurdish unity, emphasizing that it is “key to resolving the Kurdish issue in Syria” and voicing support for coexistence among Syria’s communities.
More than 400 Kurdish political, social, and cultural figures from Syria, Iraq, and Turkey attended the conference. The event included representatives from Kurdish parties, women’s organizations, tribal leaders, and activists from major Syrian cities like Damascus, Aleppo, and Hama.
The conference is overseen by Ilham Ahmed of the Autonomous Administration’s External Relations Department, Muhammad Ismail of the Kurdish National Council, and Berwin Yousef of the Democratic Union Party (PYD).
