Deir Ezzor, eastern Syria – A delegation from the international energy group UCC visited several power stations in Deir Ezzor, eastern Syria, on Wednesday to assess their condition as part of preparations to implement the agreement signed with the Syrian transitional government at the end of May.

In coordination with Deir Ezzor authorities, the delegation inspected thermal power plants, including the Deir Ezzor power station with a planned capacity of 750 megawatts, and the proposed site for a solar power plant at the Al-Taym power facility, according to Syria’s official news agency, SANA.

The agency reported that during the visit, an agreement was reached to rehabilitate three key substations: 400 kV, 230 kV, and 66 kV.

The delegation requested local officials and relevant authorities to expedite the survey of the designated areas and ensure they are cleared of mines and war remnants to allow for the immediate commencement of work.

The planned 750 MW power station in Deir Ezzor is expected to generate sufficient electricity to meet local demand, support development efforts, encourage displaced families to return, and promote investment in agriculture, industry, and tourism across the region, SANA added.

On May 29, the Ministry of Energy in the transitional Syrian government signed an agreement with Qatari, Turkish, and American companies to boost international investment in Syria’s energy sector.

The agreement includes the development of four combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plants in Deir Ezzor, Mhardeh and Zayzoun in Hama countryside, and Treifawi in Homs countryside.

The companies involved are UCC Holding and Urbacon from Qatar, Kalyon GES Energy Investments and Cengiz Energy from Turkey, and Power International USA.

According to the ministry, the total generation capacity of the four plants will reach approximately 4,000 megawatts, using advanced American and European technology. The agreement also covers the construction of a 1,000-megawatt solar power plant in Wadiyan Al-Rabie, south of Damascus.
