Damascus, Syria – The Syrian government announced on Tuesday that it has detained Darem Tabbaa, who served as Minister of Education under the country’s previous regime, citing documented violations uncovered by a government audit.

According to Wasim Mansour, Deputy Head of Syria’s Central Financial Oversight Authority, Tabbaa’s arrest follows an official investigation that gathered evidence of misconduct before the case was referred to the relevant public prosecutor, who issued the arrest order in line with legal procedures. Syrian state TV “Al-Ikhbariya” reported the details.

Mansour emphasized that the oversight authority continues to operate “professionally and independently” to safeguard public funds and promote transparency and accountability within state institutions.

On Monday, Syria’s Interior Ministry confirmed that Tabbaa was taken into custody in Damascus by the criminal investigation’s unit following a judicial decision. An unnamed security source told +963 that Tabbaa is suspected of involvement in corruption during his tenure.

Just days earlier, the Interior Ministry also detained two other former ministers who served under the previous regime. According to the same security source, former Social Affairs and Labor Ministers Rima Qadri and Kinda Al-Shammat were arrested last Friday for alleged involvement in concealing children born in regime prisons.
