Washington – U.S. Congressman Abraham Hamadeh, a close ally of President Donald Trump, held a video call on Sunday with General Mazloum Abdi, commander-in-chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

According to a statement from Hamadeh’s office on X (formerly Twitter), the Congressman informed General Abdi that negotiations between the SDF and the Syrian government will resume this month in Paris with backing from the Trump administration.

Hamadeh emphasized that the purpose of these talks is to shift Syria away from a legacy of repression and toward a political system rooted in rights and freedoms for all citizens.

The Congressman received a security briefing from General Abdi, whose U.S.-backed forces played a pivotal role in the fight against ISIS.

Hamadeh affirmed that the SDF, made up of over 100,000 Arab and Kurdish fighters trained by the U.S.-led international coalition, will be an essential component of Syria’s future.

“For over a decade, it has protected the northeast third of Syria, and established a decentralized model that protects Christians, Arabs, Kurds, and others,” Hamadeh said, praising the group’s efforts to build an inclusive governance framework as part of Syria’s transition.

He also thanked General Abdi and the Syrian government in Damascus for their continued assistance in the search for the remains of Kayla Mueller, an American aid worker murdered by ISIS, so her family may finally lay her to rest in Arizona.

Hamadeh concluded by emphasizing the importance of maintaining open communication channels with “all parties in Syria committed to peace.”
