Idlib, Syria – Dozens were injured on Thursday after a powerful explosion tore through an ammunition depot in the town of Maarrat Misrin in northern Idlib province, northwest Syria.

A medical source in Idlib told +963 that over 70 wounded individuals had already been admitted to local hospitals, with the number expected to rise as rescue operations continue.

Syrian state media al-Ikhbariya cited the Idlib Health Directorate as reporting more than 100 injuries, including women and children.

Raed al-Saleh, head of the Syrian Civil Defense (White Helmets), said emergency response teams had rushed to the site but are encountering serious challenges due to ongoing secondary explosions.

“Our teams are working at full capacity under highly dangerous and complex conditions,” al-Saleh said. “We urge residents in Idlib to stay away from the blast site for their safety.”

The cause of the explosion remains unclear. However, Israel’s Channel 14 reported that the Israeli Air Force had targeted an ammunition depot belonging to foreign terrorist groups in Idlib province.

Last month, the British Ministry of Defence announced that a UK drone strike had killed a senior leader of a terrorist organization in northern Idlib while he was riding a motorcycle.

The Maarrat Misrin blast marks one of the most severe non-combat-related explosions in the region this year and comes amid escalating regional tensions and multiple foreign air operations across Syria.
