Damascus, Syria – Najat Rochdi, the Deputy Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Syria, has reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting Syria’s future.

Speaking during a meeting held in the Qatari capital, Doha, on Wednesday, which focused on improving humanitarian and development coordination in Syria, Rochdi said the United Nations and the international community remain dedicated to building a better future for the Syrian people.

She stressed the importance of strengthening partnerships to deliver a more coordinated and effective humanitarian response inside Syria. The meeting was attended by representatives from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Qatar Charity, and other international organizations.

Later, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), Rochdi noted that the meeting focused on localizing humanitarian work and empowering local organizations in Syria, while drawing on the expertise of Syrians both inside and outside the country.

Adam Abdelmoula, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Syria, had said in late June that cooperation between the UN and the Syrian government is witnessing significant progress in various fields.

He described the relationship between the UN and the Syrian government as “very positive,” covering humanitarian, social, and economic areas, with a focus on stability and social peace.

Abdelmoula explained that all UN agencies operating in Syria are working closely with the Syrian government and supporting its efforts to reintegrate into the global financial system, which is crucial for easing transactions and boosting economic openness; a necessary step for development and reconstruction.

He also pointed out that UN organizations back the government’s programs for community reconciliation and strengthening social cohesion, highlighting that building civil peace is one of the UN’s top priorities in Syria in the coming period.

The UN suspended its development activities in Syria in 2012 due to security and economic challenges. However, the current focus is on expanding humanitarian efforts while increasingly supporting reconstruction projects and improving essential infrastructure and services.
