Damascus, Syria – German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul arrives in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Thursday for an official visit, during which he is expected to meet the country’s interim president, Ahmed Al-Sharaa.

According to the German Foreign Ministry, Wadephul will meet several officials from the interim Syrian government, headed by President Al-Sharaa.

Before arriving in Syria, the German minister visited Jordan, where he held talks with his Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Safadi, on a number of regional issues, including Syria.

During the meeting, Wadephul said: “We will support Syria’s reconstruction, provided the government guarantees its people a safe and dignified life. Syria needs a government that ensures dignity and security for all its citizens.”

He added: “By moving beyond the dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad, Syrians have entered a new era,” noting that “Germany is supporting Syria by lifting all economic sanctions imposed on it.”

Wadephul explained that the German government provides humanitarian aid to Syria, supports mine and ordnance clearance, and encourages German companies to invest in the country.

The minister stressed that Syria’s stability serves the interests of the region and the wider world, including Germany.

For his part, Safadi reaffirmed Jordan’s support for Syria’s efforts to rebuild on foundations that ensure its unity, security, sovereignty, and stability.

He also condemned repeated Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, saying they “aim to spread division and chaos in Syria.”
