Tartus, Syria — Syria’s state news agency SANA announced Friday the arrival of the first diesel-laden tanker to the Baniyas oil terminal on the Mediterranean coast.
In a Facebook post, SANA stated: “The tanker, carrying 29,794 metric tons of diesel, docked at Baniyas last night after the fall of the former regime.” The shipment is now being unloaded, the agency added.
This follows a similar delivery of household gas last month to the same terminal, operated by the Syrian Oil Transport Company.
Oil Imports Resume from Kurdish-Held Northeast
The shipments come as Syria’s Oil Ministry, under the Syrian Caretaker Government, began importing crude oil this week from fields controlled by the Kurdish-led Autonomous Administration in northeast Syria—a region outside government control since 2012.
Ahmad Al-Suleiman, spokesperson for Syria’s Oil Ministry, confirmed to Reuters that the transfers had commenced but declined to specify quantities. Confirming that the process of transporting oil from northeast Syria to refineries in the Syrian caretaker government-held areas has recently begun.
