The committee was established by a presidential decree issued by the head of the transitional period, Ahmed al-Sharaa.
During a meeting held at the People’s Assembly headquarters in Damascus on Tuesday, June 17, the committee estimated that it would require between two to three months to complete its assigned tasks, according to the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Committee members discussed the criteria and qualifications required for members of the subcommittees at the governorate level, as well as for individuals serving on electoral bodies. They also reviewed a proposed timeline for the stages of the committee’s work, aligned with the responsibilities outlined in the decree that led to its formation, to meet the electoral entitlement, as reported by SANA.
According to the agency, the committee also finalised a schedule of field visits to several governorates. The purpose of these visits is to coordinate with official authorities and civil society actors regarding the electoral process and to ensure that preparations for the elections are completed in a timely and organised manner.
On June 13, Ahmed al-Sharaa issued the presidential decree mandating the formation of the Supreme Committee for the People’s Assembly elections. The decree appointed Muhammad Taha al-Ahmad as chairman of the committee.
Other members include Hassan al-Daghim, Imad Yaqoub Barq, Lara Aizouki, Nawar Najma, Muhammad Ali Yassin, Muhammad Khader Wali, Muhammad Yasser Kahhala, Hanan al-Balkhi, Badr Jamous, and Anas al-Abdah.
The decree tasked the Supreme Committee with supervising the formation of subsidiary electoral bodies, which will be responsible for electing two-thirds of the members of the People’s Assembly.
The decree stipulated that the People’s Assembly would consist of 150 members, distributed across the governorates in proportion to population, and selected based on categories such as notables and intellectuals, in accordance with conditions approved by the Supreme Elections Committee.
One-third of the assembly members will be appointed directly by the head of the transitional period, while the remaining two-thirds will be elected through regulated electoral committees.
The allocation of seats in the People’s Assembly by governorate is as follows:
Aleppo (20), Damascus (11), Rural Damascus (10), Homs (9), Hama (8), Idlib (7), Latakia (6), Tartous (5), Deir ez-Zor (6), Hasakah (6), Raqqa (3), Daraa (4), Suwayda (3), Quneitra (2).
