DAMASCUS, Syria – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said Friday that more than 437,000 Syrians have returned from neighbouring countries since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.

The agency also documented the return of over one million internally displaced Syrians to their homes across the country, including 188,000 from camps, by April 10.

The voluntary returns came from countries including Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt, where millions of Syrians had sought refuge during the 13-year conflict. UNHCR said it facilitated the return of several groups, including a convoy of 84 displaced persons from the Al-Arisha camp in northeastern Syria to towns in the Deir ez-Zor region.

Despite signs of stabilization in parts of the country, displacement continues. The UN reported that over 33,000 people fled western provinces including Tartous, Latakia, Homs, and Hama to northern Lebanon in March due to renewed hostilities.

Local officials confirmed additional returns from the Al-Arisha camp this week, including 10 families originally from Deir ez-Zor. This marked the third such return from the camp this year.

In February, another group of 58 families returned to Deir ez-Zor from the same camp, according to the Kurdish-led Autonomous Administration in northeast Syria.
