Dr. Amro Hussein, an international relations scholar based in Egypt, echoed this perspective. Speaking to +963, he said the visit was a diplomatic signal that the U.S. seeks to realign regional alliances and strengthen security and economic cooperation with Gulf countries amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, while focusing on containing Iranian influence and managing regional conflicts.

Trump’s announcement to lift sanctions on Syria, in coordination with Saudi, American, and Turkish diplomatic efforts, came as a surprise. During his speech at the Saudi-American Investment Forum, he disclosed the move, which analysts saw as a step with strategic implications.
Dr. Hussein noted that lifting the sanctions is “a surprising yet calculated decision,” aimed at reintegrating Syria into the regional framework after years of isolation. It may also serve as a prelude to broader security and economic negotiations.
Trump’s meeting with Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa marked a significant shift in U.S. posture toward the Syrian government. According to Hussein, this could be part of a larger strategy to restore American influence in Syria, especially following recent Arab outreach to Damascus.
Howaidi described the sanctions decision as “deeply meaningful,” stressing that it must be viewed within the wider regional context. “The U.S. is recalibrating its approach to the Eastern Mediterranean. The move signals a calculated openness to Syria, backed by Saudi, Qatari, and Turkish support, countries instrumental in this breakthrough.”
Regarding the Trump-Al-Sharaa meeting, Howaidi said it represents a pragmatic diplomatic gesture: “The U.S. wanted to hear directly from Syria’s new leadership. This indicates a realignment of Syria within the Western-Arab axis under a new regional project.”

Trump’s selection of Saudi Arabia as his first international stop was far from arbitrary. Syrian economic expert Mohammad Salloum told +963 that Saudi Arabia offered the U.S. unprecedented investment commitments totaling over $600 billion, including $142 billion in defense deals. The visit thus served dual purposes: reinforcing political ties and forging a robust economic alliance.
On the impact of lifting sanctions on Syria, Salloum said, “If followed by practical steps, such as easing banking restrictions, reopening trade channels, and restoring developmental aid, this decision could significantly ease the burden on Syrians.”
He added, “A real change will occur if the sanctions relief is accompanied by domestic reforms to attract investment and rebuild infrastructure. Syria’s reentry into the SWIFT global banking system could transform the flow of remittances and international transfers, accelerating trade and reconstruction.”
Salloum called this a historic opportunity, urging immediate reforms to Syria’s investment laws. These should offer strong investor protections and encourage contributions from Syrians at home and abroad. “Innovative partnership models and tax incentives are key to mobilizing local and diaspora resources,” he said, calling the U.S. policy shift “a rare chance for renewal.”
