The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) issued a warning on Friday, June 13, regarding the potential risks of radioactive contamination both inside and outside Iran, following Israeli airstrikes that targeted Iranian nuclear facilities.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed deep concern over the escalating situation in the Middle East. He emphasised that targeting nuclear sites poses a direct threat to human life and the environment, warning that such actions could result in the release of radioactive materials with severe consequences.
According to an official statement released by Grossi, the Agency received reports indicating that a uranium enrichment facility in Iran had sustained damage due to airstrikes carried out by Israeli aircraft.
In his statement, Grossi underscored that military attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities constitute a violation of international law, as well as previous resolutions adopted by the IAEA General Conference, which explicitly condemn military action against nuclear infrastructure.
“Armed attacks on nuclear facilities may have serious consequences that extend beyond the borders of the targeted country,” he stated, urging all parties to exercise maximum restraint to prevent further escalation in the region.

Grossi also expressed his readiness to travel to Iran to personally assess the situation and ensure that nuclear technology continues to be used solely for peaceful purposes. He stressed the importance of safeguarding IAEA inspectors operating in both Iran and Israel.
Earlier on Friday, Israeli warplanes launched a new wave of airstrikes targeting multiple sites across Iran.
Israel’s Channel 12 reported that airstrikes had struck the Iranian capital, Tehran, as well as a nuclear reactor located in the city of Isfahan.
The channel also reported that Iran responded by launching ballistic missiles toward Israel; however, the rockets exploded in mid-air shortly after launch, before reaching their intended targets.
Iran’s Mehr News Agency confirmed that Israeli aircraft also struck the Nojeh Air Base, located in the city of Hamedan in western Iran.
