DAMASCUS – A group of Syrian Christians announced the formation of the Eastern National Council on Wednesday, aiming to represent the country’s diverse Christian communities in Syria’s political and civil spheres.

In a founding statement, the group said the council seeks to organize and unify the voices of Syria’s multi-ethnic and multi-denominational Christian population and to ensure their active role in rebuilding the country.

The council’s founders affirmed their commitment to the core principles of the Syrian uprising; freedom, dignity, and justice as guiding values for their political engagement.

The statement also emphasized the historical and foundational role of Christians in the Levant, noting their deep-rooted presence in Syria, which dates back to the earliest Eastern civilizations. The group highlighted the significant contributions made by Christian communities to the development of the modern Syrian state, particularly in the fields of education, culture, and inclusive national identity.

According to its founders, the council’s primary goals include safeguarding the national, religious, and cultural rights of Syrian Christians and promoting equal citizenship. It advocates for a secular, inclusive state that maintains neutrality toward all ethnic, cultural, and religious groups.

Plans are underway to hold a founding conference in Damascus, with an open invitation to all segments of Syrian society to participate. Organizers say the gathering will seek to promote collective action, national solidarity, and give voice to Syrian Christians in shaping the country’s future.

Further developments are expected as the council prepares for the conference and continues consultations with stakeholders regarding its long-term agenda.
