Brussels – Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday that it will ease some of the sanctions imposed on Syria, while maintaining sanctions that specifically target individuals linked to the deposed Bashar al-Assad regime.
In a statement reported by Syria’s official news agency (SANA), the ministry said the easing of sanctions is part of coordination with the European Union, which is working on a roadmap to gradually lift certain sanctions on Syria.
The easing aims to support efforts towards stability and recovery, but Norway “will maintain restrictions related to human rights violations and Syria’s weapons programs,” the statement read.

On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to lift sanctions imposed on Syria, according to Axios.
U.S. officials said the current Syrian government had “taken significant steps toward enhancing stability,” which led Washington to issue the order ending the national emergency status for Syria that was first declared in 2004.
