With a degree in International Relations from George Mason University, she spent 15 years in leadership roles within governmental and administrative institutions in Erbil. Yet, her true passion lay elsewhere. Driven by a dream to redefine Kurdish fashion, she transitioned into design, merging traditional Kurdish symbols with modern trends.
Fluent in five languages, Lara embodies cultural diversity, and her ambition knows no bounds. She is determined to bring Kurdish fashion to the global stage. In this exclusive interview with the fourth issue of +963, she shares her inspiring journey and innovative vision.
1.How does your Kurdish heritage influence your designs, and in what ways do you blend traditional elements with modern fashion?
My Kurdish heritage is at the heart of my designs. I draw inspiration from the rich history, culture, and symbolism of Kurdistan, incorporating traditional motifs, embroidery, and silhouettes into modern couture. I aim to honor our roots while making Kurdish fashion accessible to a global audience by combining intricate craftsmanship with contemporary cuts and luxurious fabrics.
2.Can you describe your design philosophy and the key messages you aim to express through your collections?
My design philosophy is centered on storytelling, empowerment, and heritage. Each collection embodies strength, resilience, and beauty, often drawing from themes of nature, history, and identity. Through my work, I strive to express the pride and elegance of Kurdish culture while creating pieces that feel timeless and powerful.
3.As the first Kurdish designer to present a traditionally inspired Kurdish collection at Paris Fashion Week, what was the initial response from the industry and audience?
The response was overwhelmingly positive. Many were intrigued by the uniqueness of Kurdish fashion and the depth of cultural storytelling in my designs. Industry professionals appreciated the craftsmanship, while the audience connected emotionally to the narrative behind the collection. It was a moment of pride, not just for me but for Kurdish representation in the global fashion scene.
4.What were the biggest challenges you faced when preparing for your debut at Paris Fashion Week, and how did you navigate them?
The biggest challenges were logistical ensuring the collection met the high standards of Paris Fashion Week while staying true to my cultural roots. Balancing traditional craftsmanship with the demands of a fast-paced industry required meticulous planning. Additionally, securing the right platform and visibility as an emerging Kurdish designer was a challenge, but persistence, strategic partnerships, and a strong vision helped me navigate the process.
5.By establishing your brand in the global fashion capital, how have you chosen to showcase Kurdish heritage in your designs?
I incorporate traditional Kurdish elements such as embroidery, patterns, and draping techniques into high-fashion pieces. My goal is to present Kurdish culture in a refined and sophisticated manner while keeping its authenticity intact. I also collaborate with skilled Kurdish artisans to ensure that the craftsmanship remains rooted in tradition.
6.With your recent success and growing recognition, what are your plans for expanding your brand, and how do you envision the future of your fashion house?
Expansion is a key focus, with plans to introduce ready-to-wear collections alongside haute couture. I also aim to collaborate with international designers and explore new markets while maintaining a strong cultural identity. Eventually, I want to establish a physical presence in both the Middle East and Europe to make Kurdish fashion more accessible globally.
7.Your collections often highlight themes of femininity and empowerment. In what ways do you believe fashion can advocate for women’s rights and greater representation in the industry?
Fashion is a powerful medium for self-expression and empowerment. By designing pieces that celebrate strength and femininity, I hope to inspire confidence in the women who wear them. Additionally, representation matters, I strive to give Kurdish women and artisans a platform to showcase their talents and stories. Through my designs, I aim to challenge stereotypes and promote inclusivity.
8.Born in Vienna and raised in the U.S., how do you stay connected to your Kurdish roots despite being far from your homeland?
I stay connected through my work, family, and community. My designs are a way for me to honor my heritage, and I actively engage with Kurdish culture through music, literature, and storytelling. Traveling to Kurdistan whenever possible and collaborating with local artisans also keeps me deeply rooted in my identity.
9.What advice would you give to aspiring designers, particularly those from emerging fashion hubs like Iraqi Kurdistan?
Believe in your vision and stay authentic to your cultural identity. The fashion industry can be challenging, but persistence and originality set you apart. Invest in learning, whether through formal education or hands-on experience, and don’t be afraid to showcase your heritage in new and innovative ways. Networking and building strong relationships are also crucial for growth.
