Beirut – Finnish Ambassador to Lebanon and Chargé d’Affaires to Syria, Anne Meskanen, received a delegation from the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) on Tuesday at the Finnish Embassy in Beirut, where both sides discussed the latest political developments in Syria, including an assessment of the country’s ongoing transitional phase that began in December 2024.

The AANES delegation was led by Abdelsalam Ahmad, the Administration’s representative in Lebanon since 2019, accompanied by his deputy Munzer Mohammed. Discussions focused on the current situation in Syria and the mechanisms for implementing the 10 March agreement signed between Mazloum Abdi, Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and Syria’s interim president Ahmad Al-Sharaa.

Ambassador Meskanen, who regularly visits Syria for diplomatic consultations, has previously met with several AANES delegations, most recently in early September, when she welcomed a delegation led by Badran Jia Kurd, Deputy Co-Chair of the Executive Council of the Autonomous Administration.

In earlier remarks to Saudi Arabia’s Al Arabiya channel, Meskanen underscored the importance of decentralisation and inclusive governance in Syria, stressing that meaningful recovery cannot take place without rebuilding institutions on the principles of participation, justice and accountability.

She also noted that Helsinki “looks forward to seeing a genuinely inclusive Syrian government” that represents all components of Syrian society, including women and minorities, on an equal footing.
