A suicide bombing targeted a Syrian government security checkpoint in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor province on Friday, according to Syrian state news agency SANA.

SANA reported that ISIS militants carried out the attack against the “Siyasiya” checkpoint in the city of Mayadeen, east of Deir ez-Zor. Security personnel at the site managed to kill one of the attackers, while the other detonated himself, killing one member of the Internal Security Forces.

Earlier this week, on Tuesday, two Internal Security officers were killed in a gun attack on a patrol in the coastal city of Tartus. A security source told SANA that the patrol had approached a parked car suspected to be suspicious when a gunman inside opened fire, killing two officers before fleeing the scene.

The source said that security services are pursuing the vehicle and working to identify the perpetrators to bring them to justice.

In early August, Syria’s Interior Ministry announced that Internal Security Forces had foiled a planned bombing inside a church in rural Tartus.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the ministry said it had received intelligence indicating that an outlawed group linked to remnants of the “deposed regime” was planning an attack on St. Elias Maronite Church in the village of Khreibet, in Safita area, Tartus Governorate.

According to the ministry, special operations units conducted a raid after careful monitoring, arresting two cell members on their way to carry out the attack. Security forces seized an explosive device prepared for detonation, threatening notes directed at local residents, and a black flag.

The ministry stressed that Internal Security will not allow any group to threaten the region’s safety and is committed to thwarting plots aimed at destabilization.
