Washington – The U.S. State Department on Thursday called for an immediate and transparent investigation into the killing of American citizen Hussam Saraya last week in Syria’s southern province of Sweida, where deadly clashes have recently erupted.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott confirmed Saraya’s death and stated that U.S. officials have engaged in direct discussions with the Syrian government regarding the incident.
In parallel, the European Union issued a strong statement condemning the recent violence in Sweida and called for an independent international investigation into alleged human rights violations. The EU stressed that all responsible parties must be held accountable and reiterated the importance of a lasting ceasefire and a political solution that protects civilians and ensures humanitarian access.
The EU criticized the escalating violence in Sweida, which has resulted in hundreds of casualties, including many civilians. It singled out attacks by armed groups and Bedouin fighters as clear violations of international humanitarian law. According to a statement reported by Euronews, the EU cited “serious abuses” including summary executions, arson of homes and shops, and other atrocities.

“A transparent and credible investigation is needed into all reported incidents,” the EU said, calling for accountability through national and international judicial mechanisms.
The EU also warned against hate speech and sectarian incitement, urging all parties to cease inflammatory rhetoric and work toward social solidarity and community reconciliation.
Moreover, the EU reaffirmed its support for humanitarian organizations operating in southern Syria, helping provide food, water, and medical services to those affected by the ongoing crisis.
The U.S. echoed these concerns on Wednesday, with State Department deputy spokesperson Tammy Bruce urging the Syrian government to ensure justice and accountability.
“The United States urges the Syrian government to lead the next phase with accountability for all those responsible for abuses,” Bruce said during a press briefing.
Bruce reiterated the U.S. commitment to Syrian national unity and a comprehensive peaceful resolution that includes all minority communities.
