Hasakah, northeastern Syria – The Autonomous Administration in northeastern Syria announced plans to release 43 Syrian families from al-Hol camp, in cooperation with the transitional Syrian government and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
Sheikhmus Ahmad, head of the Displacement Affairs Office within the Autonomous Administration, told +963 on Saturday that the evacuation is scheduled for Sunday. The families, considered humanitarian cases in need of medical care and special assistance, will be allowed to return to their hometowns in Syria’s Aleppo province.
Ahmad explained that the coordination with both the Syrian government and UNHCR aims to streamline the reception and resettlement process in the areas where these families will return. “This release is strictly humanitarian. The Syrian government’s role is limited to facilitating their return and providing logistical support, without involvement in selecting which families leave the camp,” he said.
Ahmad noted that the status of other displaced Syrians in al-Hol remains unresolved, as no formal agreement has yet been reached between the Autonomous Administration and the Syrian government regarding their return.
The official also revealed that the administration is working on future plans to release additional groups from the camp, prioritizing similar humanitarian cases.
The announcement follows a visit by a delegation from the transitional Syrian government to al-Hol camp on May 24, accompanied by international coalition forces. Government officials from Syria’s foreign and interior ministries, as well as representatives from the country’s intelligence and counter-terrorism units, met with camp administrators to discuss the situation of displaced Syrians and the mechanisms for their release.
Ahmad emphasized that Sunday’s planned release is part of the administration’s broader humanitarian effort to gradually reduce the camp’s population and improve conditions for those remaining.
