WASHINGTON– The United States expects Syria’s transitional government to ensure full accountability for those responsible for recent acts of violence in the country, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Dorothy Shea said Monday.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Shea said Washington was particularly concerned about individuals in prominent leadership roles and emphasized that justice must prevail in Syria’s new political landscape.

“This will send a clear message to all Syrians that no one is above the law in the new Syria,” she said.
Her comments follow a wave of violent incidents in Syria in recent weeks, raising alarm among international observers and rights groups. While details about specific events remain limited, reports suggest that civilians in minority communities, including the Druze, were targeted.
On April 28, Shea reiterated U.S. support for a transparent and accountable Syrian leadership, calling for a definitive break from more than five decades of authoritarian rule under the Assad regime.
The U.S. continues to monitor the Syrian authorities closely, Shea noted, stressing that Damascus bears responsibility for the country’s next steps.

She also urged the government to “fully renounce and suppress terrorism,” refrain from threatening neighboring countries, and “exclude foreign terrorist fighters from any official roles”
Additionally, she called on Syrian leaders to prevent Iranian influence on their territory, dismantle any weapons of mass destruction, and cooperate in recovering American citizens who remain missing in Syria.
