The southern regions of Syria, stretching along the Jordanian border, are witnessing rapid developments in security coordination and border management between Amman and Syria’s transitional administration. These efforts come amid shared security and economic challenges, particularly concerning the illicit trade of narcotics and arms. In response, Jordan has intensified its border security measures, deploying advanced surveillance technologies and bolstering its military presence to curb smuggling operations led by networks affiliated with armed militias still operating, albeit to a lesser extent, inside Syrian territory.
Security Cooperation and Border Control
A major focal point of Jordanian-Syrian relations is the Nassib-Jaber border crossing, the primary gateway for trade and passenger movement between the two nations. Despite its reopening in 2018 after years of closure due to the Syrian conflict, cross-border movement remains inconsistent due to persistent security concerns. Ensuring safe passage for travelers and goods requires continuous coordination between both governments to mitigate risks posed by lingering instability in southern Syria.

To strengthen border security, Syria’s transitional administration has sought to deepen cooperation with Jordan. Speaking to +963, Issmat Al-Absi, a senior advisor in the Syrian Ministry of Defense, emphasized the importance of bilateral efforts, stating:
“Enhancing security cooperation with Jordan is essential for regional stability. We are committed to tightening border control and curbing illegal activities through the implementation of joint patrols and improved communication between security agencies.”
“We have begun implementing field plans aimed at improving communication mechanisms between the security agencies of both sides and activating joint patrols to ensure more effective border control. Additionally, we are working to overcome logistical obstacles to facilitate the smooth flow of goods, ensuring safe trade movement and supporting the local economy.” Al-Absi added.
Economic and Security Coordination
Observers believe that cooperation between Jordan and Syria’s transitional administration reflects a mutual need to secure the border, particularly amid international pressure on Damascus to curb drug trafficking. The shared understanding of the importance of securing border crossings represents a positive step toward strengthening economic and security relations between the two countries.

The effectiveness of these joint measures, however, remains contingent on the evolving political and security landscape. A recent report by the Amman-based Center for Strategic Studies projected that continued coordination could reduce smuggling activities by up to 60% within the next year. The report also highlighted the role of drone surveillance, thermal imaging technology, and increased intelligence-sharing in enhancing border security.
Meanwhile, a senior official from Syria’s Ministry of Economy revealed that negotiations are underway to expand trade corridors with Jordan, aiming to reintegrate Syria into regional commerce. The official noted that such initiatives are part of a broader strategy to rebuild Syria’s economic ties and attract foreign investment, particularly from neighboring states.
