The President of the Interim Government, Ahmed al-Sharaa issued a resolution on Wednesday, March 13, establishing Syria’s National Security Council, a body tasked with coordinating and overseeing security and political policies in the country.

According to the resolution, the National Security Council will operate under the powers granted to the President of the Republic and focus on safeguarding the nation’s supreme interest. The council’s formation is intended to enhance national security and address evolving political and security challenges.

The newly formed council will be composed of key governmental figures, including the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Defence, Interior and the Director of Public Intelligence. Additionally, the President of the Republic will appoint two advisory members based on their expertise and experience.

A specialized seat will also be designated by the President to oversee technical and scientific matters relevant to council discussions.

The council will convey regularly or at the request of the President of the Republic to deliberate on national security issues and the challenges facing the state. Its functions and operational framework will be determined under presidential directives to ensure effective coordination among various security institutions.

The resolution has already come into effect, with relevant authorities notified to implement the decision.

The establishment of the National Security Council follows a surge in violence along Syria’s coastal region, where more than 1.000 civilians and military personnel have reportedly lost their lives, according to human rights organizations. Reports of field executions and other human rights violations have heightened concerns over the country’s fragile security situation.

These recent developments have intensified fears of further instability and potential security breakdowns across the country, making the council’s role critical in addressing Syria’s mounting security challenges.
