Others, however, see it as an overreach that has affected respected national and cultural figures with no direct ties to the former regime.<\/span><\/p>\n

While the decision was framed as part of a broader effort to \u201ccleanse\u201d public institutions of authoritarian symbolism, critics argue that its implementation lacked sufficient historical scrutiny, resulting in the removal of names deeply embedded in the city\u2019s collective memory.<\/span><\/p>\n

Separating Education from Politics<\/b><\/h2>\n

Supporters of the renaming process argue that it represents an essential step toward restoring the neutrality of educational institutions. In their view, schools should not bear the names of political figures elevated through party loyalty or propaganda, but rather figures who embody shared educational, cultural, or national values.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sami al-Haddad, the principal of one of the schools affected by the decision, said it was illogical for an educational institution to carry the name of a political figure glorified solely for party affiliation. According to al-Haddad, the move helps rebuild trust in education as part of a broader national project rather than an extension of a narrow political system.<\/span><\/p>\n

Opposition to the decision has been particularly strong among writers and cultural figures in Hama, who argue that the changes failed to distinguish between regime symbols and independent national figures. Poet Maher Al-Ali, one of Hama\u2019s best-known literary voices, described the removal of certain names as deeply troubling. In comments to <\/span>+963<\/b>, he said it was painful to see the names of poets, educators, and national figures erased simply because they lived during a specific historical period, rather than because they were aligned with the former regime. He warned that such actions risk partial erasure of the city\u2019s memory, even if unintentional.<\/span><\/p>\n

Al-Ali cited several figures whose names were removed, including Ibrahim Hananu, a leading figure in the struggle against French colonial rule, and Said al-Aas, one of the most prominent fighters of the modern era who joined the jihad in Palestine and was later martyred. Their legacy, he noted, was celebrated by major poets such as Omar Abu Risha and Badawi al-Jabal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other removed figures include Yusuf al-Azma, Syria\u2019s former minister of war; Badr al-Din al-Hamed, known as the \u201cPoet of Independence,\u201d who was imprisoned during the anti-French struggle; doctors such as Saleh Qanbaz, who was killed by French forces; Othman al-Hourani, a symbol of educational reform; and Wajih al-Baroudi, the renowned physician, philanthropist, and one of Hama\u2019s most distinctive modern figures.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThese were not incidental names,\u201d Al-Ali said. \u201cThey remain an essential part of the city\u2019s cultural and national memory.\u201d While stressing full support for removing names associated with the fallen Assad regime, he called for urgent correction of what he described as a serious mistake that risks erasing Hama\u2019s historical identity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Teachers and Students React<\/b><\/h2>\n

Reactions among teachers and students have been mixed. Informal surveys conducted among school communities suggest broad agreement that renaming schools goes beyond administrative procedure and touches on cultural symbolism and identity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many teachers and students supported the principle of separating education from politics but called for the establishment of an independent cultural committee made up of historians, educators, and writers from Hama. Such a body, they argued, could evaluate names before removal and ensure a clear distinction between political authority and national memory.<\/span><\/p>\n

During visits to several schools, students expressed confusion over the lack of explanation accompanying the changes. One student, Raghad al-Hussein, told <\/span>+963<\/b> that while she liked the new school name, she wished the reasons for the change had been explained beforehand.
