US officials described the incident as a direct attack on American interests in Syria. President Donald Trump and the Department of Defense pledged a firm response, reaffirming their commitment to continue military operations against ISIS and to strengthen protective measures for US personnel. The attack has reinforced Washington\u2019s long-standing assessment that the group, despite territorial defeat, retains the capability to conduct lethal operations through decentralized cells.<\/span><\/p>\n

Damascus condemned the attack as an \u201cact of terrorism\u201d targeting joint counterterrorism efforts and announced the launch of investigations alongside broad arrest campaigns in surrounding areas. Syrian officials framed the incident as a shared security challenge rather than a breakdown in coordination, stressing that the attack underlined the ongoing threat posed by ISIS and the need for continued cooperation with international partners.<\/span><\/p>\n

The incident has been widely viewed as a sensitive test of US\u2013Syrian security coordination at a time when both sides are seeking to establish more structured cooperation against extremist groups. Concerns over security lapses were echoed by Sabri Al-Jundi, a journalist with Egypt\u2019s Al-Ahram newspaper, who told <\/span>+963<\/b> that the attack exposed a serious and potentially dangerous failure within Syria\u2019s internal security structures, as well as weaknesses in US force protection on the ground. He argued that official denials by Syria\u2019s Interior Ministry did not dispel these concerns but rather highlighted the scale of the breach.<\/span><\/p>\n

Al-Jundi noted that the attacker was able to move freely in an area reportedly designated for internal security forces, raising questions about vetting, surveillance, and internal coordination. He added that the ministry\u2019s insistence that the area was secure, and its denial of any link between the attacker and security forces, conflicted with the operational reality suggested by the attack itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Al-Jundi, the fact that the perpetrator was able to approach, or possibly enter, the meeting site indicated a significant lapse that could not be explained solely by external infiltration. He argued that the ministry\u2019s pre-emptive denial of any internal connection, without being prompted, further fuelled suspicion about the depth of the security failure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Coordination and Military Reform<\/b><\/h2>\n

Abdel Nour said that in response to the attack, security coordination is likely to continue and may even intensify, though its operational nature could change in the short term. He suggested that the focus may shift toward stricter vetting of new recruits, enhanced background checks, and the introduction of advanced screening technologies, including facial-movement analysis and deception-detection tools, alongside improved communications and surveillance systems.<\/span><\/p>\n

He also stressed that reshaping the Syrian army\u2019s military doctrine has become a central priority for US planners, describing it as the foundation of any sustainable security partnership. In his view, rebuilding institutional culture and professional standards is as critical as tactical cooperation in preventing future attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n

While the immediate impact of the incident will be felt in operational adjustments, Abdel Nour noted that broader debate is likely to take place within US defence and intelligence institutions rather than between Washington and Damascus. At the same time, figures close to interim President Ahmed Al-Sharaa are expected to argue that such attacks, while serious, can occur in any conflict-affected country and should be addressed through institutional reform rather than political disengagement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Political and Security Messages<\/b><\/h2>\n

The timing of the attack has also raised political concerns in Washington. Abdel Nour noted that it occurred shortly before a final US Senate vote on repealing or amending the Caesar Act sanctions, warning that the incident could negatively affect congressional sentiment and reinforce scepticism toward engagement with Syria\u2019s current leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n

From a security perspective, Al-Jundi said the messages sent by the attack were clear. ISIS, he argued, is signaling that it remains active, capable of selecting its targets, and able to strike US forces in Syria at times and locations of its choosing. At the same time, the attack highlighted the Syrian government\u2019s limited ability to fully control its territory or guarantee security for both local and foreign actors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Al-Jundi added that the incident came at a moment when tentative and evolving relations are taking shape between Syria\u2019s interim authorities and the US administration, aimed at establishing stable security coordination and maintaining the American military presence in the country. He said Damascus has sought to present itself as a guarantor of that presence, emphasizing that it poses no threat to US forces or regional actors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking ahead, Al-Jundi argued that the attack could ultimately lead to deeper security cooperation, potentially providing the United States with justification for more direct involvement in Syrian counterterrorism operations. Despite this, he argued that the incident underscores the urgent need for a clear, coordinated counterterrorism strategy capable of addressing both security threats and underlying institutional weaknesses.<\/span><\/p>\n
