Trade relations between Jordan and Syria saw a significant revival during the first nine months of this year. Jordan\u2019s exports to Syria surged by 383 percent, reaching around USD 217.5 million, according to official data reported by the Jordan News Agency Petra. Syrian exports to Jordan also grew by 71.4 percent to about USD 90 million. This brought total trade between the two countries to USD 330 million, compared with USD 97.5 million in the same period last year.<\/span><\/p>\n

These figures signal an important economic and political shift in the relationship between Amman and Damascus. The jump in trade reflects more than a temporary rise in activity \u2013 it points to real recovery in cross-border commerce. Yet the numbers also reveal a structural imbalance in favour of Jordan\u2019s exports, raising questions about the nature of this growth, its sustainability, and the obstacles facing deeper economic integration.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jordanian Dominance<\/b><\/h2>\n

Economic expert Mahmoud Al-Rawashdeh tells <\/span>+963<\/b> that the Jordanian and Syrian economies naturally complement each other. Syria is an important market for Jordanian agricultural and industrial goods, while several Jordanian sectors rely on raw materials imported from Syria. He says the current figures do not merely reflect short-term recovery but could mark the beginning of a genuine economic partnership if supported by long-term agreements and joint industrial and agricultural ventures.<\/span><\/p>\n

Al-Rawashdeh explains that Jordan has an opportunity to position itself as a logistical hub for Syria\u2019s future reconstruction and neighbouring markets. This would allow Jordan to expand services in transport, storage, insurance and trade financing. Jordanian exports currently centre on strategic sectors for Syria such as construction materials, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and processed foods.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the Syrian side, fresh produce, food items and raw materials continue to flow into the Jordanian market, giving consumers more options and supporting local supply chains at competitive costs. But the most striking figure, according to Al-Rawashdeh, is the dramatic 383 percent increase in Jordanian exports to Syria, reaching USD 217.5 million.<\/span><\/p>\n

He attributes this record rise to several factors, including strong demand for Jordanian pharmaceuticals and food products, long valued in the Syrian market. Some goods exported from Jordan may be raw or semi-processed materials needed by factories in Syria that have resumed production and struggle to import supplies from more distant or costly sources.<\/span><\/p>\n

Al-Rawashdeh adds that part of the increase may come from re-exporting foreign goods through Jordan to Syria, supported by Jordan\u2019s transport networks and regional position. The full reopening of the Jaber\u2013Nassib crossing has lowered transport costs and sped up deliveries.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite slow progress in large-scale reconstruction projects, demand for construction materials remains high as repairs continue damaged infrastructure. Joint governmental and banking arrangements have also facilitated money transfers and trade financing, encouraging Jordanian companies to re-enter their traditional Syrian market. Al-Rawashdeh concludes that the 383 percent rise in exports is a strong sign of practical recovery in bilateral trade, but ensuring long-term growth requires more trade agreements, better logistics and financial coordination, and solutions to customs and banking challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n

Syrian Exports<\/b><\/h2>\n

Syrian exports to Jordan saw healthy growth of 71.4 percent, reaching around USD 90 million. Although this rise is welcome compared with previous years, economic academic and Syrian industry specialist Hussam Al-Sayyid tells <\/span>+963<\/b> that the figure still falls short of Syria\u2019s true economic potential.<\/span><\/p>\n

He explains that the biggest barrier is financial \u2013 international restrictions have made Jordanian banks extremely cautious about facilitating letters of credit for Syrian imports. This forces many Syrian traders to rely on cash or complicated payment methods, increasing costs and reducing competitiveness. As a result, the data reveals a large trade gap in Jordan\u2019s favour, exceeding USD 127 million during this period.<\/span><\/p>\n

Production challenges also affect Syrian export capacity. Factories still struggle with shortages of energy, fuel and foreign currency needed to import raw materials. This limits the ability to produce goods in quantities that can meet Jordanian demand. Agriculture makes up a significant share of Syrian exports, but farmers face high production costs and export difficulties. Nonetheless, the Jordanian market remains an important source of hard currency for Syrian businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n

Al-Sayyid says the renewed trade activity is a positive step towards regional economic integration, but major challenges remain. These include reducing the widening trade deficit, improving infrastructure and supporting production sectors so Syria can compete more effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

Political and Regional Dimensions<\/b><\/h2>\n

The revival of trade between Jordan and Syria carries political implications that go beyond numbers. Political analyst Najm Al-Abdallah tells <\/span>+963<\/b> that the surge in commerce reflects a strategic shift towards deeper normalisation with Damascus, using economic cooperation as a foundation for improved political and security relations.<\/span><\/p>\n

He notes that the rise in Jordanian exports signals a political decision to gradually reintegrate the Syrian economy into its regional environment. Many countries in the region are increasingly viewing economic interdependence as a tool for easing tensions and promoting stability.<\/span><\/p>\n

Expanding trade and facilitating the movement of goods also strengthens both countries\u2019 ability to manage their shared border, limit smuggling and curb the illicit drug trade by redirecting some of this activity into monitored, legal channels. Jordan and Syria have already agreed to expand trade cooperation next year.<\/span><\/p>\n

The growing trade flows are a necessary first step towards improved political relations but still face structural and financial obstacles. Jordan enjoys immediate competitive advantages in the Syrian market, but sustaining these gains will require joint political will to solve logistical, regulatory and financial issues. Supporting Syrian goods and easing import procedures would help achieve a more balanced and stable trade relationship. As economic ties deepen, security coordination between the two sides is likely to expand, strengthening internal stability in both countries.<\/span><\/p>\n
