Every road, village and hillside has acquired strategic value, and every shift on the ground carries implications that stretch far beyond the borders of Syria. In Daraa, Quneitra and Suwayda, the political and military landscape now swings between two possible futures \u2013 a negotiated settlement that redefines authority, or a spark that ignites a wider confrontation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The interim government led by Ahmad Al-Sharaa is operating with a strict logic of political survival. Power is the primary objective, and everything else is measured against the need to maintain control over the state. Al-Sharaa is not seeking grand regional influence or deep popular legitimacy \u2013 he is seeking continuity. Even the potential return of Russian deployments to the south is not dismissed outright, so long as it helps assert state authority amid local disorder or provides a degree of balance with Israel. This strategic flexibility offers Al-Sharaa room to manoeuvre and signals that the ultimate aim is not simply to protect his administration, but to manage the south as a decisive theatre shaping Syria\u2019s political future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Escalating events in the south \u2013 from clashes between Bedouin tribes and Druze groups in Suwayda and Daraa, to Israeli ground advances into multiple Syrian villages \u2013 pushed Al-Sharaa towards negotiating a security arrangement with Israel. The goal was straightforward: stabilise the border, prevent further escalation and create a degree of order before instability reached Damascus. Israeli advances into Syrian villages are not limited tactical manoeuvres \u2013 they test boundaries, impose new realities and demonstrate that Israel is ready to respond immediately to any perceived threat. For Tel Aviv, control over the south is not merely a tactical shield, but a tool for recalibrating regional balances and securing critical lines of influence against unpredictable moves from Damascus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relations between Druze leaders in Suwayda and Israel have also evolved markedly. Security contacts and intelligence exchanges have created an operational network functioning independently from Damascus. What began as limited communication has gradually become an emerging strategic channel that allows Israel to shape local dynamics, while enabling Druze authorities to protect their communities and assert internal influence. The south, therefore, has become a bridge between local interests and regional agendas \u2013 a meeting point between survival strategies, fragile alliances and long-term calculations. For Al-Sharaa, it is a test of his ability to navigate unconventional partnerships while preserving the coherence of the new political order.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the ground, the situation remains unstable. Sporadic clashes, assassinations and persistent tensions create a fragile environment in which any misstep could trigger escalation. Southern Syria has become the clearest measure of the interim government\u2019s ability to enforce state authority and contain disorder, just as it becomes the space where Israel seeks to consolidate its position before any political arrangement becomes irreversible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strategically, the south is not merely a security issue \u2013 it is central to wider regional calculations. Any security agreement with Israel requires Damascus to adopt a new model of local governance, involving tighter border control, restrictions on heavy weaponry, stability in Suwayda and Daraa, and limited room for Turkish influence. All of this must be coordinated delicately, reflecting the region\u2019s evolving balance of power. At the same time, any failure in the south risks igniting a regional conflict, as the interests of multiple actors converge on the same territory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regional powers add further layers of complexity. Israel is acting with measured assertiveness, Turkey watches with deep concern, Russia remains a limited stabilising force, and other international players are pressuring all sides to avoid a wider conflict. Southern Syria has thus become a microcosm of a much larger struggle \u2013 the redefinition of the Syrian state, the reordering of regional influence, and the transformation of potential chaos into a durable arrangement, or into open conflict if calculations collapse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, the south is not simply a battleground but a test of survival \u2013 a zone where the interests of the new Syrian leadership intersect with Israel\u2019s security concerns, and where Druze communities navigate between self-preservation and external alliances. Whether the south becomes the key to a settlement or the gateway to war will be determined by developments on the ground: by Israeli military steps, by semi-covert arrangements between Druze actors and Israel, by negotiations between Al-Sharaa and Israel, and by each political move that shifts the delicate balance between stability and collapse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Southern Syria is therefore not only an internal challenge but a living model of regional transformation. The new authorities seek survival through bargaining and accommodation, Israel pursues its security priorities, Druze communities balance their interests with pragmatic alliances, and regional powers monitor every shift.
