A series of coordinated statements from Washington, Tel Aviv, Damascus, and Beirut reflect this transitional moment. The United States is urging \u201cde-escalation\u201d and a reset of regional relationships, while monitoring Iranian activity and the movements of Iranian-aligned groups. Israel insists its focus remains limited to preventing hostile military entrenchment in Syria \u2013 a strategy it defines as pre-emptive and defensive rather than an attempt to ignite a broader conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n

Syria, for its part, is signaling a preference for internal consolidation, reconstruction, and diplomatic re-engagement, stressing that any future arrangement with Israel must come through political channels. Meanwhile, Lebanese officials continue to emphasize the need to avoid being drawn into a confrontation, even as domestic debates over Hezbollah\u2019s military role intensify.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s Strategic Calculus<\/b><\/h2>\n

Hussein al-Deek, professor of international relations and a specialist in Israeli affairs based in Jerusalem, describes Israel\u2019s posture as a form of \u201cstrategic deterrence and power signaling.\u201d He argues that Israeli military preparations are linked to what Tel Aviv perceives as Hezbollah-related activity on or through Syrian territory.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to al-Deek, \u201cthe context today is fundamentally different from the years preceding the fall of Syria\u2019s former regime. Israel may be framing these movements as a response to Hezbollah, but such justifications can also serve to legitimize Israel\u2019s presence and ensure leverage over future negotiations with Damascus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He suggests Israel may be preparing to use its position in northern Syria as a bargaining chip, noting that Israel has historically relied on \u201cfacts on the ground\u201d to secure long-term advantages. The doctrine of \u201cpreventive war\u201d \u2013 operating beyond its borders to neutralize threats before they reach Israeli territory \u2013 now appears embedded in its approach to Syria and Lebanon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Al-Deek also argues that Israeli actions carry an implicit message to Lebanon\u2019s government, aimed at increasing pressure on Beirut to restrain Hezbollah\u2019s military autonomy. In parallel, he points to what he describes as a shifting alignment in Damascus \u2013 one more closely tied to Washington following Syria\u2019s entry into the international coalition against ISIS and new diplomatic engagement, including President Ahmed al-Sharaa\u2019s recent visit to Washington.<\/span><\/p>\n

Media in the United States, he notes, have floated reports suggesting that a draft framework between Syria and Israel is \u201clargely ready,\u201d though awaiting formal political approval. Whether accurate or not, al-Deek views such leaks as part of broader attempts to influence the negotiating environment and incentivize Damascus toward concessions.<\/span><\/p>\n

He concludes that a direct military confrontation is \u201chighly unlikely,\u201d citing Syria\u2019s limited military readiness, domestic reconstruction priorities, and what he calls effective U.S. efforts to manage dual channels with both Damascus and Tel Aviv.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israeli Strikes and the Iranian Network<\/b><\/h2>\n

From Damascus, political analyst Abbas Sharifa presents a different angle. He argues that Israel\u2019s calculations often produce outcomes that inadvertently strengthen Iran\u2019s regional network.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIsraeli airstrikes have continued despite major changes on the ground and even after Hezbollah\u2019s partial withdrawal from certain Syrian areas,\u201d Sharifa says. \u201cIn practice, these strikes create security vacuums that benefit both Hezbollah and Iranian-aligned groups by opening channels for more covert movement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Sharifa does not believe Hezbollah seeks a large-scale confrontation inside Syria, but he stresses that Israel\u2019s operations can provide Tehran\u2019s partners with new opportunities \u2013 especially along routes used for smuggling personnel or equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n

He disputes claims of significant weapons transfers from Syria to Lebanon, noting that large-scale or heavy weapons smuggling is \u201cnot feasible\u201d given Syrian military deployments along the border. Small-scale or individual transfers, he says, are possible, but systemic cross-border networks remain constrained by the presence of multiple Syrian army divisions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sharifa adds that the United States is increasing pressure on Israel to minimize strikes in Syria, contributing to what he describes as a \u201ctemporary freeze\u201d in direct escalation. Syria, he argues, is not positioned to enter a conflict currently, especially amid diplomatic openings and efforts to secure an eventual security arrangement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lebanon\u2019s Unsettled Equation<\/b><\/h2>\n

On Lebanon, Sharifa stresses that the future of any confrontation depends on internal Lebanese politics rather than regional actors. He notes that Lebanon continues to struggle to reconcile its obligations under UN resolutions with domestic political realities.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Lebanese state has not succeeded in asserting control over Hezbollah\u2019s arsenal,\u201d he says. \u201cAs long as this imbalance persists, the risk of conflict remains the most plausible scenario.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
