It reflected a mutual need to organise the relationship within more realistic boundaries \u2013 at a moment when the regional map is being redrawn at speed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Damascus\u2019s interim leadership is working within a narrow margin, shaped by economic priorities and the rebuilding of state institutions. Breaking the political isolation imposed during the previous regime requires a measured opening towards influential powers \u2013 and the United States sits at the top of that list. For Washington, the aim is to recalibrate its engagement with Syria in line with its goals: countering extremist groups and preventing the country from becoming a closed sphere of rival influence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The meeting can be read through two lenses. The first is political realism \u2013 states pursuing power and interests through flexible deals. The second is social constructivism \u2013 the role of image and legitimacy. Damascus wants to reshape its image; Washington wants to test whether a stable partnership is possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This opening is not dramatic. It is closer to a political test, in which the US probes what is achievable with Damascus. For Syria\u2019s side, the meeting should, in theory, pave the way for suspending or lifting sanctions and reintegrating its economy into the global financial system. For the US, security and economic cooperation act as entry points to stabilising Syria and preventing rival actors from filling the vacuum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The meeting does not mark the birth of an alliance, but it does suggest the end of total estrangement. Washington now sees Syria as part of a wider balance \u2013 one that includes the Eastern Mediterranean, Iraq and Jordan. The US is using a form of soft power through economic pressure tied to reform and openness \u2013 steering political behaviour without direct intervention. Damascus, in turn, is trying to leverage the symbolic value of breaking diplomatic isolation to re-establish a place on the international stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The emerging relationship reflects what can be called complex interdependence \u2013 security and economic interests are now so intertwined that neither side can impose its will outright. Washington needs Syrian stability to manage Eastern Mediterranean dynamics. Damascus needs the US to ease economic restrictions and reopen investment channels. This creates a web of interests that is costly for either side to undo, forcing the relationship into balance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From an American perspective, Syria is now a balancing card. Washington is searching for partners with whom it can work within defined mutual interests. Preventing the collapse of the new Syrian state and limiting Russian influence inside its institutions are now central concerns. In this sense, the Sharaa meeting is part of a broader US repositioning aimed at keeping Syria under a framework of \u201cmanaged stability\u201d rather than letting it drift into hostile spheres.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US opening to Damascus should not be read as a full strategic shift. It is a political test \u2013 a way to gauge how willing the interim government is to join the wider regional arrangements shaped by Washington. The outcome depends on whether both sides can establish practical trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American approach is based on \u201cinvesting in stability\u201d \u2013 offering conditional support in return for disciplined political behaviour. This model is visible across several Middle Eastern arenas: no return to direct intervention, but an emphasis on managing influence through local partners. For Damascus, this gives some breathing room, but it also sets a strict ceiling on how far any partnership can go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The meeting cannot be understood outside the wider regional transformation. The structures that shaped the Middle East since the fall of Iraq and the rise of Iran are no longer fixed.
