Syria and Iraq \u2013 two countries tied by centuries of history, intertwined geography and a shared sense of fate \u2013 are living through an exceptionally fragile and complex stage. In Syria, profound transformation is unfolding following the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024 and the rise of Ahmad al-Sharaa\u2019s interim government. Iraq, meanwhile, continues its arduous search for stability after decades of conflict. In this charged atmosphere, even a single spark \u2013 such as a court ruling sentencing a young Syrian to death in Iraq \u2013 could ignite sectarian and regional tensions, serving the interests of an unknown third party seeking to exploit the chaos at the expense of both peoples.<\/span><\/p>\n

Calls for restraint and an end to bloodshed are growing louder, as voices across the two nations warn of the dangers of slipping into renewed conflict and urge dialogue, reason and calm to prevail.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mounting tension between the two neighbours<\/b><\/h2>\n

Omar Qasim, a resident of Deir ez-Zor, told <\/span>+963<\/b>: \u201cRecently, we have begun to feel uneasy about the rising tensions between Syria and Iraq, which are directly affecting ordinary people on both sides. We Syrians and Iraqis have coexisted for generations \u2013 we want peace, not another cycle of violence. The recent incidents, both in Syria and Iraq, show that there are forces trying to exploit the situation for their own interests. We must remain vigilant and stand united against them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He added: \u201cOur leaders must see the bigger picture and work to calm matters rather than escalate them. Dialogue and understanding must come first \u2013 not more blood. We must remember that we are neighbours and brothers, bound by shared tribal roots and a common faith.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For Imad al-Mohammad, a Syrian labourer living in Iraq, the atmosphere has become increasingly tense. Speaking to <\/span>+963<\/b>, he said: \u201cThings have been difficult since the fall of the regime in Syria. Certain provocations have been carried out by individuals serving foreign agendas, seeking to plant discord between Syrians and Iraqis. Many of us here fear that these events could affect our daily lives. We came to Iraq to find safety and work \u2013 not conflict.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cSince arriving in Iraq, I\u2019ve made close Iraqi friends, and we have taken part in joint activities that reflect our shared culture and history.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Another Syrian worker, Khaled al-Ajjaj, echoed these sentiments: \u201cI came here to work, not to fight. I work alongside thousands of Syrians in Iraq, while my family struggles financially back home. Iraqis welcomed us and stood by us in our hardest times. My relationship with my Iraqi colleagues is based on respect and cooperation \u2013 we build together and support each other\u2019s economies. How could anyone wish to turn brothers and friends into enemies?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He went on to note that most Syrians living in Iraq had fled their country during the years of war, escaping violence and destruction. \u201cWe fled one war \u2013 we do not want to see another one start here. Conflict would only serve those who want to see our region in flames,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tribal leaders call for wisdom<\/b><\/h2>\n

Sheikh Dahham al-Jabouri, a prominent leader of the Obeid tribe in Iraq\u2019s Anbar province, told <\/span>+963<\/b>: \u201cThe tribes of Syria and Iraq are the first line of defence against those trying to sow discord between our peoples. Whoever seeks to divide us is only fishing in troubled waters. Our bonds of kinship, trade and marriage go back centuries \u2013 no isolated incident, no matter how painful, can erase that shared history.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He warned that regional and international powers are competing for influence along the Syrian-Iraqi border: \u201cThis is a dangerous reality \u2013 a wake-up call for all. If the border ignites, the fire will not stop at either side; it will burn everyone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Sheikh al-Jabouri, the tribes refuse to be instruments of conflict and can play a key role in calming tempers and preventing violence. \u201cWe call for tribal reconciliation conferences between respected elders from both countries,\u201d he said. \u201cWe must open direct and transparent channels to defuse crises. The language of wise dialogue must prevail. Our tribal tradition teaches us to resolve disputes with reason and good words, not with weapons and insults. We are the true shield against strife \u2013 and we will do everything in our power to stop those with malicious intent from succeeding.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Voices for coexistence<\/b><\/h2>\n

Syrian activist Majid al-Daas told <\/span>+963<\/b>: \u201cOur memories are painful. We don\u2019t want to pass war on to our children. Syrians and Iraqis have suffered enough to understand the dangers of another descent into civil conflict. Choosing peaceful dialogue as the main response to crises shows that both peoples are deeply aware of what renewed violence could bring. We remember all too well the tragedies that engulfed Syrians, Iraqis, Lebanese and Libyans in their civil wars. We have tasted the bitterness of strife before \u2013 now we want to build a new homeland free from inherited hatred.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThe psychological makeup of both societies naturally leans towards tolerance and coexistence, given the religious and sectarian diversity woven through their geography. Yet both peoples are increasingly exposed to unaligned groups and political agendas, which makes vigilance essential. Iraqis are our brothers \u2013 they shared our pain during the sectarian violence of 2006\u20132008, when thousands were killed. That must remain a lesson for all of us. We cannot afford to repeat it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

According to al-Daas, \u201cthe real danger lies not in individual court rulings, but in those who exploit such cases to stoke conflict. The only beneficiaries are hidden forces \u2013 the \u2018third party\u2019 that profits from division. Both countries face serious threats, and the calls for calm are, quite literally, a matter of life and death.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He concluded: \u201cDespite ongoing international warnings about sectarian fractures and their grave consequences for both Syria and Iraq, the reality we face today demands that we abandon secondary disputes and handle crises with patience and composure. We face a common enemy \u2013 internal conflict only strengthens it. The clashes along our shared border serve only our mutual adversaries, foremost among them the terrorist groups still lurking in the region.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Hope ultimately rests on the ability of both Syrians and Iraqis to overcome these challenges, strengthen their bonds of brotherhood and cooperation, and build a future rooted in peace and stability across their shared land.<\/span><\/p>\n
