After the ceasefire, it became clear that the war had exposed an unstable region lacking any central power capable of managing its tensions or contradictions. While attention focused on the military side, the deeper shock appeared in the very idea of stability. Many Arab countries treated the war as an external crisis, much like previous nearby conflicts, as though it had little to do with them – even though its impact reached the heart of their political and security structures.

At this level, the Gaza war became a silent test for the entire regional order. It raised long-postponed questions about who holds initiative in the Middle East and about the new relationship between power and legitimacy in a region where managing security has replaced genuine political action.

What became evident after the war is that the regional system has been exposed to a political vacuum. The very idea of “initiative” has turned into temporary crisis management. The war reminded everyone that the Middle East has been functioning for years on a kind of “self-management of crises”– where every side seeks only to contain its own fallout. The current “stability” is therefore not the result of consensus, but of a shared fear of collapse.

Recent developments also showed that traditional tools of influence have lost their effectiveness. Power is no longer measured by military or economic capacity alone, but by the ability to present a narrative that convinces both domestic and foreign audiences, turning material strength into political legitimacy.

The official Arab order, built on the formula of “deterrence in exchange for normalisation”, has lost its ability to control major trajectories. The war exposed the limits of both total security and impossible neutrality. Security itself has become multi-layered – military, economic, symbolic, and moral. State sovereignty today is measured not only by its control of borders, but by its capacity to produce a political meaning that justifies its existence before its citizens and the world.

At the same time, traditional power centres are losing their monopoly over defining stability. The regional equation is now shaped by overlapping interests – energy routes, maritime corridors, and flexible diplomatic mediations that cross alliances. The Middle East has turned into a web of interlinked interests more than a collection of neighbouring states. Gaza, though small, has become a symbolic node within this web, exposing the fragility of the moral and political order that governs everyone.

The course of the war showed that the deeper change in the region lies in how power itself is perceived. The gap between official discourse seeking to impose a single narrative and the daily realities experienced by societies has widened.

The war has thus reproduced politics from outside its traditional institutions. Even though military balances have not changed, the conflict eroded official narratives in several Arab states and shifted debate from a question of control to one of meaning. This shift, though subtle, is the most significant outcome of the war, as it forces regimes to face a new kind of test: how to maintain authority in a time when control over the narrative is no longer guaranteed.

Read also: Why Peace with Israel No Longer Scares Arabs

The Gaza war exposed the limits of the intellectual and political framework that, for years, shaped how the world viewed the region – and how Arabs viewed themselves. It showed that the distance between legitimacy and justice has become clearer than ever, and that the regional order, long protected by political pragmatism, now stands bare before its own people.

This shift in public awareness makes the post-war phase more dangerous than the war itself, as it threatens the very rules on which regional politics have been built.

The current scene shows a Middle Eastern system entering a phase of organised disintegration: it has neither collapsed nor renewed itself. The major powers in the region can no longer monopolise control over conflicts, while smaller actors have gained influence through economic leverage, mediation, or control of public opinion.

The Middle East today resembles a “system without a centre”, where the positions of players shift more often than the rules themselves.

Yet no coherent alternative has yet emerged. International powers continue to seek balance without a genuine political project, while Arab capitals alternate between adaptation and fear. Regional institutions that were meant to express a collective will have turned into symbolic platforms with little real impact, and political coordination has fallen to its lowest level in decades.

The war showed that what used to be known as “axes of influence” are no longer solid.
