A year into Syria\u2019s interim government, led by President Ahmad Al-Sharaa, a complex web of challenges continues to confront the new administration. Between the economic, social, and political files, little tangible progress has been made towards stability or reconstruction \u2013 a reality that directly affects Syrians\u2019 basic rights to dignified living and personal security.<\/span><\/p>\n

Economic and living conditions remain the most urgent challenges. Many Syrians still face a shortage of essential services and rising living costs, while the interim government has yet to present a coherent plan for reconstruction or for the resettlement of returning refugees. This situation is compounded by security concerns \u2013 including assassinations, kidnappings, explosions, and property seizures \u2013 leaving a visible mark on social safety, especially among minorities and vulnerable local communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the political and security fronts, the government struggles to assert control over armed groups and divided territories. Local conflicts, such as those in Suwayda and areas in the north and east held by the Autonomous Administration, remain unresolved, with some authorities still maintaining partial control. The gap between the state\u2019s declared authority and the fragmented reality on the ground continues to expose the limits of governance.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the social level, the government still appears to operate within narrow sectarian frameworks, limiting inclusive participation and broad-based support. This approach erodes trust between citizens and the state, undermining efforts to manage Syria\u2019s diversity through a sustainable, representative model of governance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Internationally, the interim government initially enjoyed wide regional and global backing \u2013 particularly from Gulf states \u2013 with promises of investment and diplomatic engagement. Yet the current economic, social and security conditions, alongside ongoing rights violations, have significantly weakened that momentum. The refugee and humanitarian files remain central to this cooling of enthusiasm, as many displaced Syrians remain hesitant to return amid persistent risks and poor living conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, the transitional leadership has yet to extend full control over national territory, despite earlier commitments. This incomplete sovereignty complicates normalisation with the international community and hampers negotiations on sensitive regional security issues \u2013 including future arrangements with Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the core of these difficulties lies the worsening economic crisis. Persistent poverty, limited public services, widespread arms, and sanctions-related restrictions continue to create a volatile environment that fuels social frustration and instability. These pressures risk dragging parts of the country back into patterns of insecurity that predate the political transition.<\/span><\/p>\n

In essence, there is a widening gap between the government\u2019s internal rhetoric and its external message. The promises of reform and renewal voiced publicly remain difficult to translate into concrete progress on the ground. To bridge this divide, the transitional leadership must revisit its strategies in security, economics, social justice and inclusive governance \u2013 strengthening trust both domestically and internationally. Only through genuine, accountable reform can Syria\u2019s new administration hope to lead the country towards lasting stability and credible renewal.<\/span><\/p>\n
