In Syria, absence still haunts thousands of homes. Mothers and wives continue to wait, year after year, for news that might lift the darkness of uncertainty. Every day passes between hope and fear, between the fragile hope of a return and the pain that never relents. This is not simply the loss of one person; it is the collapse of entire lives. The disappearance of sons and husbands has robbed families of peace and safety, leaving behind a wound that never heals.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to a report by the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), enforced disappearance has been used as a systematic weapon by the regime of Bashar al-Assad since 2011, serving as a tool of intimidation and collective punishment. When the regime fell in December 2024, fragments of truth began to surface, yet tens of thousands remained unaccounted for.<\/span><\/p>\n

The SNHR database records at least 177,057 disappeared persons, including 4,536 children and 8,984 women; numbers that represent not statistics, but thousands of personal tragedies embedded in the collective memory of every Syrian household.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has documented more than 85,000 enforced disappearances since the start of the uprising in 2011, including those detained by various factions. Many remain missing, their fate unknown; a silence that deepens the pain of families and underscores the urgent need for justice and truth.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Voice of Mothers: \u201cAs if absence were my destiny\u201d<\/b><\/h2>\n

Raida Ibrahim Arnos, from rural Idlib, has carried a pain that does not fade since 2012, when her son Mustafa Shaaban Arnos, aged twenty-four, was arrested.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a simple young man,\u201d she tells <\/span>+963<\/b> with a trembling voice. \u201cHe worked every day to support his family. He was never involved in politics, never held a weapon. They arrested him only because his brothers opposed the regime, he became the victim of their punishment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey took him at a military checkpoint. Since that moment, there has been no trace of him. We searched everywhere: prisons, intermediaries, even paid large sums of money just to find a sign. But there was nothing. No record, no confirmation. For years I\u2019ve been melting away in his absence. Yet I still have hope that one day I will see him again,\u201d she continued, holding back tears.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the regime collapsed, Raida\u2019s hope surged again. \u201cI waited for the prisons to open, imagining he would walk back to me. But the reality was more brutal than I could bear, there was no trace of Mustafa. It\u2019s as if absence itself was written as my fate.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Wives: Homes without support, children without fathers<\/b><\/h2>\n

The tragedy is not only a mother\u2019s burden; wives live it differently. Warda Khabour al-Youssef, wife of missing Jumaa Ibrahim al-Youssef, speaks for thousands of Syrian women who have become the fragile pillars of homes emptied by disappearance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJumaa was a simple man,\u201d she tells <\/span>+963<\/b>. \u201cHe worked every day to provide for us and our children. In 2012, while trying to cross the Syrian-Lebanese border for work, he was arrested. Since then, no news. I don\u2019t know if he\u2019s alive or dead. That uncertainty is the hardest part. Some say he died, but there\u2019s no body, no proof. His mother died waiting. And I\u2019m left alone, carrying the weight of endless waiting.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy children and I lived through years of hardship and fear. Each time detainees were released, I searched again, and every search ended in silence. Sometimes people send me random photos and ask, \u2018Is this your husband?\u2019 I say no. Every false hope reopens the wound. My children have grown up without him, and I\u2019ve grown old waiting,\u201d She added wearily.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shocking Numbers, No Answers<\/b><\/h2>\n

Behind these stories, numbers loom like a nightmare. Ciger Hussein, coordinator of the Committee for Missing Persons and Detainees, explains to <\/span>+963<\/b>: \u201cSadly, the numbers are huge. Our estimates exceed 200,000 missing persons, possibly reaching 300,000 enforced disappearances. The figures are terrifying, and the absence of official records makes it impossible to know the full scale.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cThe most painful thing is that no remains are returned to their families. Mass graves remain buried beneath the earth. Unless records are opened and burial sites revealed, the pain will remain doubled; a grief for the loss, and another for the absence of truth,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hussein concluded stressing the need for urgent government action: \u201cWe need a national body for the missing, to uncover the truth, protect witnesses, and enact laws that criminalise enforced disappearance. The international community must also provide expertise and technology to locate mass graves and link databases between families and organisations. Only then can trust be rebuilt and justice begin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Between Pain and Delayed Justice<\/b><\/h2>\n

The stories of Raida and Warda intertwine with thousands of similar ones, showing that the issue is far more than a legal file; it is an existential wound for an entire society. Every mother who gazes at her son\u2019s photo, every wife waiting for footsteps that never come, embodies a national grief still seeking closure.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Syria today, the tragedy is divided between heavy statistics and weary faces, between prolonged suffering and a stubborn hope that refuses to die. Yet the question remains suspended: When will this long absence become truth? And when will mothers and wives finally receive an answer to end their endless waiting?<\/span><\/p>\n
