This concept is rooted in the Qur\u2019anic principle of Wasatiyyah (the \u201cmiddle way\u201d), expressed in the verse: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThus,\u00a0have We made of you an Ummat justly balanced\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2:143). This \u201cmiddle way\u201d represents equilibrium between belief and tolerance, and between adherence to the essence of religion and openness to contemporary realities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moderate Islam is distinguished from rigid or closed interpretations of the faith by its emphasis on ethical practice (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">orthopraxis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) rather than fixed dogma (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">orthodoxy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). It highlights the practical dimensions of religion, how it is lived and applied in daily life, in order to serve human beings and their communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The core principles of this approach include justice, tolerance, equality, compassion, and the belief in human dignity as a bearer of the divine spirit, regardless of religious or ethnic background. Neo-Islam also insists on Ijtihad (independent reasoning) and Tajdid (renewal), using them as essential tools to re-read sacred texts within their contemporary context. This allows for a dynamic and flexible understanding of Islam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most important aspects of moderate Islam is its balanced stance towards secularism and modernity. Instead of either outright rejection or blind acceptance, it seeks to distinguish between the religious and the political without falling into the trap of complete separation. Rather, it aims to \u201crestore the beauty, clarity and vitality of religion, to revive what has faded, and to spread it among people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the social level, moderate Islam emphasises social and gender justice. This includes defending women\u2019s rights and reinterpreting texts on gender-related issues in ways that align with justice and fairness. It also recognises religious pluralism, respecting other faiths and beliefs as part of divine will.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Politically, moderate Islam supports democracy, human rights, and civil freedoms, seeing these values as consistent with the Islamic essence when properly understood. It rejects theocracy and Islamic fundamentalism, calling instead for a civil model of governance that draws inspiration from Islamic values without transforming into a traditional religious state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project of moderate Islam faces significant challenges. Conservative currents resist it, branding any attempt at renewal as misguided innovation. On the other side, radical secular groups often seek to marginalise religion entirely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also criticised by some as a Western-imposed concept, allegedly designed to reshape Islam according to external agendas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, the movement continues to grow, particularly in Muslim societies undergoing democratic and social transitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are successful examples of this approach. Indonesia, for instance, has developed its own distinctive expressions such as \u201cArchipelagic Islam\u201d and \u201cProgressive Islam\u201d.
