Warnings are mounting within Syrian and international circles about the dangers of hate speech and sectarian polarization on the country\u2019s future, especially in the transitional phase following the fall of former president Bashar al-Assad. Social media platforms have become a primary battlefield where internal grievances mix with external agendas, creating a volatile environment that directly impacts Syrians\u2019 daily lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

This phenomenon goes beyond insults and online spats; it has become an obstacle to reconstruction and institution-building, draining resources while deepening social fractures and delaying political stability.<\/span><\/p>\n

Syrian journalist Mohammad Fattouh, based in London, told <\/span>+963<\/b> that the roots of hate speech in Syria stretch back decades, but escalated sharply after the fall of the regime. \u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing online is an explosion of long-suppressed grievances, shaped not only by the revolution years, but by the sectarianism, censorship, and repression entrenched for decades,\u201d he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n

Old Grievances, New Amplifiers<\/b><\/h2>\n

Fattouh noted that hate speech is not purely a Syrian product; foreign actors also played a role. International investigations, including BBC reports, have revealed thousands of fake accounts and online \u201carmies\u201d linked to regional powers, deliberately fuelling sectarian divides to serve their own interests. This interference, he said, became especially visible during the coastal and Suwayda incidents.<\/span><\/p>\n

He warned that digital hate campaigns have cost Syrian lives across sects and communities, creating barriers to reconciliation and diverting focus away from reconstruction and the transitional process. Instead, Syrians are dragged into side battles, \u201clike firefighting\u201d, that consume limited energy and resources.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, holding perpetrators accountable remains difficult. Many operate from abroad or behind fake identities. Meanwhile, debates rage over whether certain posts fall under freedom of expression or constitute incitement. Authorities risk criticism for \u201csilencing voices\u201d when prosecuting hate speech, However, Fattouh argued, this does not remove the need for stronger laws to draw a clear line between free speech and sectarian incitement.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe danger,\u201d he added, \u201cis that these divisions turn into deep wounds lasting for generations. They don\u2019t remain just online quarrels; they spill directly into communities on the ground.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Fattouh also pointed out that voices calling for calm often go unheard, drowned out by polarizing rhetoric. Efforts to counter fear-driven campaigns face an uphill battle, but he stressed that improving living conditions can help diminish the appeal of divisive narratives. \u201cHate feeds on hardship,\u201d he said, \u201cand fades when life gets better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

From Politics to Identity Wars<\/b><\/h2>\n

Independent diplomat Izzat Baghdadi told <\/span>+963<\/b> that the fall of Assad\u2019s regime did not open a structured political path, but instead left a vacuum where contradictions exploded. \u201cWhat emerged was hate speech and degrading language as a substitute for politics,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Baghdadi argued this climate is not just moral decline but reflects the fear instilled by the former regime, which linked its survival to avoiding chaos. Social media became a stage for venting hostility, amplified by influencers and organized campaigns that entrenched divides.<\/span><\/p>\n

The conflict, he said, shifted from debates about governance into an identity struggle, with some factions framing sectarian majority as political legitimacy. Moderate voices, meanwhile, fell silent under the threat of being labelled traitors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYoung people were especially vulnerable,\u201d Baghdadi added. \u201cSome were swept into hate speech, while others withdrew into migration or isolation, eroding chances for coexistence and silencing centrist alternatives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

To counter this, Baghdadi called for media literacy programs, digital reconciliation initiatives, and diaspora alliances that project a unifying narrative. He emphasized that education is key: \u201cOnly through education can diversity be seen as strength, not threat, and acceptance of the other as a condition for shared life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Coordinated Hate Campaigns Exposed<\/b><\/h2>\n

In May, a BBC investigative <\/span>report<\/span><\/a> revealed foreign networks on X (formerly Twitter) actively fuelling sectarianism and spreading hate speech in Syria.<\/span><\/p>\n

The investigation found tens of thousands of coordinated accounts pushing disinformation about the situation in Syria, targeting the transitional government and minority communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

BBC analysts tracked more than 2 million posts since Assad\u2019s fall on December 8, studying a sample of 400,000. They identified 50,000 posts containing false or unreliable claims against the new administration. Crucially, 60% of these came from accounts based outside Syria.<\/span><\/p>\n
