The conferences in Hasakah, in northeastern Syria, and Brussels were more than just political events or gatherings of a select few discussing the \u201caffairs of Syrian communities.\u201d They were, in many ways, like breaking old locks on the doors of Syrian politics; locks that had been tightly shut for decades under Bashar al-Assad and his father before him. For years, public discussion was off-limits, and independent initiatives were punished.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Hasakah, Kurds, Druze, Alawites, and Arab tribes came together, with virtual participation from sheikhs and community leaders from across the country. In Brussels, the Syrian Components Coordination Committee brought together academics, activists, and intellectuals from inside and outside Syria to talk about the constitution, decentralization, minority rights, and the future of the state. In most countries, this would be routine political work. But in Syria, where politics has long been tightly controlled by a central authority, it was a bold act of defiance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Damascus reacted with anger. Official statements called the Hasakah conference \u201can act of war\u201d and described the Brussels meeting as part of a conspiracy against national unity. Not because these gatherings involved weapons or militias, but simply because they broke the silence, proving that discussions about the state\u2019s future were no longer the exclusive domain of the authorities. That alone made them a \u201cthreat\u201d in the eyes of the regime.<\/span><\/p>\n

But beyond the rhetoric, there is a deeper reality. These conferences signal a shift in Syrian politics. Communities are daring to think about alternatives and find ways to shape their own future. Some see this as a step toward a broader political space where decisions are made collectively, not by a narrow elite. Others see the beginnings of new alliances among minorities, potentially working with regional and international actors, whether in Tel Aviv, Washington, or elsewhere, to secure influence in Syria\u2019s future.<\/span><\/p>\n

Syria has seen similar attempts before. In the 1940s and 1950s, political life was full of parties, movements, and unions representing the country\u2019s diversity. But with coups, the rise of the Ba\u2019ath Party, and decades of Assad rule, that vibrancy disappeared. A single party, a single discourse, and a single vision replaced it. Any deviation was crushed, co-opted, or eliminated.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today\u2019s gatherings in Hasakah and Brussels may be small in scale, but symbolically they break the political stagnation. After more than a decade of war, and with multiple powers holding sway on the ground, Syrians are rediscovering that meeting, debating, and imagining alternatives is not treason; it\u2019s survival.<\/span><\/p>\n

These conferences bring political and intellectual energy back into a space that has long lacked it. They reopen conversations about federalism, decentralization, and equal citizenship, outside the control of a central authority. Ironically, the regime\u2019s condemnation only gives them more visibility. Every angry statement from Damascus increases public interest, making the conferences seem more important, more \u201cforbidden,\u201d and more central to Syria\u2019s political future.<\/span><\/p>\n

The idea of a \u201cminorities\u2019 alliance,\u201d which Damascus accuses these conferences of fostering, is not new in the region. From Lebanon to Iraq, from Kurdish experiences in the north to cross-sect alliances during periods of crisis, there is a long history of coalitions formed either out of shared fear of domination or mutual interests in facing larger adversaries. Whether these conferences are truly moving in that direction or not, the very act of bringing these groups together in a shared space for discussion is significant in itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Between Hasakah and Brussels, between physical halls and virtual meetings, and between official statements and private discussions, a new political landscape is slowly emerging. These conferences may not be a solution in themselves, but they are part of a path forward; a path that relies not on fear or top-down control, but on dialogue, debate, and experimentation.<\/span><\/p>\n

After years of war and destruction, these gatherings are a rare sign that Syria is not politically dead. They show that people still believe in meeting, talking, and negotiating, even when it\u2019s messy, as the only way to protect Syria as a land and a people, and to build a future that isn\u2019t monopolized by one party, one weapon, or one ideology.<\/span><\/p>\n
