In present-day Syria, existential questions are inseparable from the crackle of gunfire, and identities grow only on palms stained with blood. Here, minorities don\u2019t ask for privileges, they seek basic guarantees for survival. And the majority, despite its numbers, has never firmly decided its place, between ruler and ruled, state and tribe, dominance and justice.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Recently in Suweyda, a new chapter of violence and confrontation unfolded. The Druze community, once cautiously balancing dignity with vigilance, now finds itself at the heart of a complex conflict. Clashes with Bedouin tribes, ongoing friction with the regime, and proximity to Israel all leave the Druze facing a stark reality: no room for compromise on dignity, no sanctuary in neutrality.<\/p>\n

The Druze didn\u2019t provoke escalation, but they refuse silent submission. They know the regime doesn\u2019t see them as partners, but as a tool to be used when convenient, and silence isn\u2019t peace; it\u2019s surrender.<\/p>\n

Earlier, on Syria\u2019s coast, an entire sect was disciplined. As the regime rebuilt itself after years of bloodshed, it taught a harsh lesson to the old ruling order. Alawite communities that spoke out weren\u2019t insurgents; they were fearful, grasping for dignity under a new authority. But the response was brutal and immediate.<\/p>\n

The state, long self-described as protector of sects, turned into their oppressor when it could no longer trust their silence. In an instant, protection became punishment, and potential paternalism became public reprisal.<\/p>\n

In Damascus, a Christian church was bombed, killing at least thirty worshippers. The church was more than a building; it symbolized the state\u2019s historic, if superficial, pact with Christians. That the attack passed with no serious investigation or public mourning was not surprising. Christians, who endured displacement and repression, were again told: this land offers no safe corner, not through war alone, but through neglect too.<\/p>\n

Amid this turmoil, old-yet-new questions resurface: What do minorities want in Syria? Simply this; what is often denied by force: a just state, genuine representation, and security not threatened by caprice.<\/p>\n

Minorities don\u2019t demand a tailor-made homeland; they hope for one that won\u2019t consume them. They don\u2019t want to rule, only to avoid being crushed. They ask for something not granted in a century: dignity without assimilation, partnership without exploitation, safeguard without guardianship.<\/p>\n

But the heavier question remains: what does the majority offer? And what is the majority, really? In Syria, the meaning of \u201cmajority\u201d shifts with geography and weapons. Numerically strong groups may hold political weight, from such vantage, they can lead. Yet when they lose project, their presence becomes burden on themselves and others.<\/p>\n

A majority that treats minorities as docile tools or foreign appendages only deepens crises. When shared citizenship becomes suspect, difference becomes fear, and political unity is framed as treason, the state is gone, even if it remains on the map.<\/p>\n

And one can\u2019t ignore Israel, quietly watching Syria unravel as a self-claimed victor. A neighbour no longer reliant on airstrikes or armies; every day without resolution is a political win. Israel can act or abstain, sometimes adding fuel to the fire. Each sectarian clash, church bombing, Druze fragmentation, or Alawite crackdown; each validates its security narrative: a fractured Syria is less dangerous than a united one. So even hope-driven rapprochement between minorities and Israel becomes propaganda fodder to delegitimize Syrian unity.<\/p>\n

From the Kurdish corner, the picture is different but equally precarious. As the most organized minority with autonomous ambition, Kurds pay high prices. They don\u2019t just seek escape from repression, they aim to reshape the equation entirely. Yet despite establishing facts on the ground in Syria\u2019s northeast, they face internal and regional vetoes: the regime won\u2019t accept them as equals, Turkey hunts them as an enemy, and their political alliance with Damascus remains fragile. Still, they persist in extending the hand of partnership; cautiously, and intentionally.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, Syria isn\u2019t in the grip of a new revolution or a discrete security crisis; it\u2019s undergoing a real erosion of state and social structure. Minorities are restless, the majority waver, and the incomplete state remains absent from the equation. Syria doesn\u2019t need another regime. It needs a whole new formula; one that breaks from dominance, favours equality over faction, human rights over hereditary ruin.<\/p>\n

Because when a Druze elder in Suweyda is burned, or an Alawite villager is insulted, or a church is bombed in Damascus, or a Kurdish child is forbidden their language, when minorities are demonized in the name of nationalism or unity, know that something fundamental is collapsing. Not just the regime, but the social contract itself. Syria isn\u2019t threatened by weapons alone; it’s undermined by the normalization of injustice. It will only stand again if its next chapters are written with the ink of equality, clauses of partnership; not loyalty alone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
