In recent years, Syria has seen a marked surge in hate speech and incitement on social media, deepening divisions among the diverse components of Syrian society.<\/span><\/p>\n

This wave of inflammatory content has not only saturated digital platforms but also seeped into everyday life, undermining the country\u2019s fragile social fabric and civil peace. As a result, Syria\u2019s internal dynamics have grown more volatile, and national security risks have escalated.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the onset of the Syrian conflict in 2011, the Assad regime has used state-run media platforms and social media to disseminate hate speech targeting the opposition, portraying it as a terrorist movement.\u00a0 and seeking to tarnish its image by spreading lies and incitement against its leaders and supporters. These efforts aimed to delegitimize opposition figures and their supporters, often through disinformation and inflammatory rhetoric. The regime has leveraged its media apparatus to entrench societal divisions and maintain control.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, extremist groups such as ISIS exploited online platforms to circulate propaganda\u2014videos and militant songs inciting violence against specific communities. These messages have fanned the flames of sectarian and regional tensions, further destabilizing the security landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n

The impact of hate speech has not been confined to Syria\u2019s borders.\u00a0 In neighbouring countries such as Lebanon, misinformation spread via social media has fueled hostility toward Syrian refugees.<\/span><\/p>\n

In April 2024, following the killing of Pascal Suleiman, false narratives about the circumstances of his death circulated online. These unverified claims stoked public anger, heightened tensions, and triggered a wave of violent attacks against Syrians living in Lebanon.<\/span><\/p>\n

These incidents highlighted the broader threat posed by fake news and misinformation, particularly in regions grappling with refugee populations. Such content can inflame public sentiment, disrupt social cohesion, and destabilize already fragile host communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Social media platforms have become fertile grounds for the proliferation of hate speech, with individuals exploiting these channels to target specific groups based on religion, sect, or ethnicity. This rhetoric not only deepens societal rifts but also undermines core values of tolerance and coexistence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, the normalization of hate speech fuels extremist ideologies and increases the likelihood of violence, further eroding security and entrenching polarization. In 2024 and 2025, dubious accounts such as \u201cOmar Rahmon\u201d and \u201cAlawite Citizen\u201d emerged online, actively spreading misinformation and inflammatory content aimed at vilifying segments of the Syrian population.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the collapse of the Assad regime in December 2024, a sharp uptick in hate speech and sectarian rhetoric was observed, spreading fear and uncertainty among civilians.<\/span><\/p>\n

By March 2025, legal proposals were introduced to criminalize the denial of mass atrocities in Syria, part of a broader push to counter hate speech and extremist propaganda. There is also growing demand for the enforcement of existing laws prohibiting incitement and sectarian hatred, in hopes of curbing the influence of such content in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n
