Washington<\/b>– UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen has stated that the recently issued constitutional declaration in Damascus “could fill an important legal void.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Pedersen expressed hope that the declaration would serve as “a robust legal framework for a credible and inclusive peaceful transition.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, UN spokesperson St\u00e9phane Dujarric emphasized in a press briefing the need for proper implementation of the constitutional declaration, calling it “a key element alongside ongoing efforts to ensure an orderly transitional governance process.”<\/span><\/p>\n

On Thursday, Syria\u2019s Interim Administration leader Ahmad Al-Sharaa approved the\u00a0 constitutional declaration after receiving it from the drafting committee.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the committee, the declaration outlines a five-year transitional period and establishes Islam as the religion of the head of state. It further stipulates that Islamic jurisprudence will be the primary source of legislation while guaranteeing freedoms of speech, expression, media, and press. Additionally, it reaffirms the state\u2019s commitment to Syria\u2019s territorial integrity, national unity, and respect for cultural diversity.<\/span><\/p>\n

The constitutional declaration also ensures property rights and women\u2019s rights in education and employment. It grants the People\u2019s Assembly (parliament) the authority to summon and question ministers. However, the president\u2019s extraordinary powers are limited to declaring a state of emergency, with any dismissal, removal, or limitation of presidential authority left to the People\u2019s Assembly.
